Ulrichen

Set in beautiful Goms Valley, in the middle of the Wallis Alps, Ulrichen lies at 1,346 metres above sea level, at the foot of the Nufenen pass and near the Furka and Grimsel passes.

Switzerland's highest military airfield operated between Ulrichen and Geschinen until 1999. When it was closed down, part of the old airfield was transformed into a natural habitat with an artificial lake, ideal for bathing in the summer. The remaining runway section is used for leisure activities, with a play ground, pic nic area and inline skating park.

Despite its size – its population is about 200 people – Ulrichen has much to offer:

  • 4 hotels each with a restaurant
  • a small supermarket (Volg) with post office services
  • a tourist office
  • a souvenir shop
  • the Senngi bar, located next to the Volg, has a nice terrasse in the summer
  • the sport shop (Gommer Sport), next to Haus Rotten, has a bar, sells fresh bread in the morning and also rents sport equipment. Info: www.langlaufcenter-ulrichen.ch
  • For a great wood barbecued steak experience or local specialties, we recomment Baschi steakhouse, situated Ulrichen and Geschinen (about 20 minutes’ walk):
